3 Sure Fire Tips on How to Stay on Top of Your Game: Habits of Emotionally Intelligent People

emotional intellifenceAccording to Andrew Coleman, Emotional intelligence (EI) is the ability to monitor one’s own and other people’s emotions, to discriminate between different emotions and label them appropriately, and to use emotional information to guide thinking and behavior.

This definition has given us a deeper understanding why emotional intelligence is the most powerful tool for success not only in relationships but in business too. The following are three tips in staying on top of your game by being emotionally intelligent:

  1. Check and Pause

We’re all emotional people, sometimes our emotions get the best of us it sometimes turns petty things to meaningless big deals. A meeting that didn’t go well as planned should not create a monster in you. Check and pause before you say anything damaging. Emotionally intelligent people think over other people’s feelings and how they will react to it if they are in the same situation.

It’s not always about you. Rise above every hurdle, every challenge that will come your way. Everyone has bad days and needs a little boost from time to time. Just because it did not work out that day doesn’t mean that it will stay that way forever. Take the incident for what it is and move one.

  1. Focus on the Bigger Picture

Keeping the end-goal in mind will make it easier to negotiate with difficult clients or bosses. Let go of small bumps and do not feel discouraged, going smooth and not having any holes and rough edges along the way does not make it all sweet victory. Sometimes, these bumpy rides will make you a better person, it will help you gain wisdom and knowledge on how to do it better next time. Do not get sidetracked – focus on the bigger picture.

  1. Detoxify

Negative people destroy a relationship – may it be business or personal. Learn how to let go of these people. Emotionally intelligent people know that there are many positive people around to waste on someone bringing negative vibes, they are not able to micro-manage toxic ones; even if these kinds of people are performers and contributes to the team.

If you have done tip #1 and you still see yourself in a highly stressful environment, it’s time to free yourself from the toxins. If certain people take you down and zaps you out of energy, makes you feel bad about yourself, insincere, critical, and needy –  they’d better be out of your life.

Short and sweet, isn’t it? That should be your end goal. After all, life is too short. In business and personal matters, talk is cheap. To be on top of your game, you must learn the art of discernment, you must know when to keep on trying and when to say, enough is enough. Achieving success in business and life in general takes a lot of effort and if you are emotionally intelligent – you are one step closer to achieving that dream.
